An Introduction to Awareness - an exercise
Picture
Awareness is one of the five practices I introduce in my eBook.

Here's an excerpt from the eBook about Awareness:

Awareness is how you experience your life, both internally and externally. It’s your knowledge and perception of yourself and the outer world and how they interact.

Let me begin with a few questions.

Do you know why you make certain choices rather than others? Do you know what holds you back and what moves you forward? Do you know what makes you happy – can you explain it in words?

The concept of consciousness, which we have access to through our awareness, can be difficult to grasp. The words we typically use every day aren't designed for describing the intangible, the "things" that we can't experience with our five physical senses. For example, how would you describe an idea?

When it comes to understanding our inner world, it usually takes a little more effort, at least at first. There's a new vocabulary to describe experiences, one that draws from both psychology and spirituality, from east and west.

If this is new to you and you're willing to put aside judgment and doubt, you just might discover mysteries about yourself and find new ways to live your life.

Awareness is the access point and the basis for your true self. Not your job or relationships or accomplishments or your appearance. It's how you know almost everything that makes you "you."

If you're highly sensitive, you're most likely already aware of people attracting and exchanging energy.

In this brief introductory exercise, I ask you to pay attention to "things" about yourself that you probably don't pay attention to very often:
At first, sit in a quiet space, undisturbed and with as few external distractions as possible.
Then try to do this exercise whenever you can, when you're alone and when you're interacting with others.

Begin to calm and to center yourself by paying attention to your surroundings - furniture, colors, etc.

Then move inward -
Is your body tense or relaxed?

Notice your thoughts and feelings.
Are they your thoughts or did you absorb them from someone else – family, a friend or colleague etc?
Can you remember when you first had them? What were the cirumstances?
How often are you influenced by certain people or situations?
Do your thoughts and feelings usually match the circumstance you're in?
Or do you replay old thoughts or imagine future experiences?
How often do you respond in kind to others - are you kind when they're kind and do you get angry when someone
is rude or dispectful to you?

The purpose of this exercise is to start you noticing how you view your world.
What are the original sources of your thoughts and actions?
What are your values and the standards you live by?
How were they created?

Scientists tell us that 95% of our life actions are motivated by our unconscious.
Can you imagine how much of your life happens because of thoughts and beliefs that guide you via autopilot,
without your awareness?
Do you see why increasing your awareness is crucial if you want to understand or to change your life?

Continue to ask yourself these questions and whenever possible, record them so you can review them again.
