An Introduction to Your Body's Awareness - an Exercise
This exercise is about physically noticing all of your body. It's about developing a relationship with it so you appreciate it, learn what it needs and understand how it communicates with you.

Eventually, you'll move into the less physical aspects of your body, how it's the container for life energy. But that will come later.

The Exercise

Find a quiet space where you won't be disturbed and you don't need to pay attention to anything, such as machinery or children.

1. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
2. Close your eyes. If you're easily distracted, tie a scarf around your head to cover them.
3. Take a few deep breaths to calm yourself.
4. Place your attention on your toes. You can wiggle them to help you focus on them. Describe everything you notice about them:
  • Are they warm or cold?
  • Is there any pain or itching or other sensation?
  • What are they touching?
  • Are only some toes touching something?
  • If any toes or part of a toe is touching fabric or another surface, describe it. Is it smooth or rough or soft, warm or cool? Which part of your toes is it touching?
5. Move your attention upwards to the rest of your feet, your ankles and on to the other parts of your body. Stop as often as want, giving each part the same level of attention, answering the same questions.
6. Repeat daily.
After you've done this exercise for several days, do you have a greater appreciation for your body's sensitivity?
